Dr. Salley named 2015-16 Humanitarian of the Year

Erik Salley, PT, DPT, ’14, MA, OCS, MDT, was honored as the 2015-16 Humanitarian of the Year Award recipient during the American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Sections Meeting held in Anaheim, Calif. The award, given by the A.T. Still University-Arizona School of Health Sciences’ (ATSU-ASHS) Alumni Chapter Board during an ATSU reception, recognizes an ATSU-ASHS graduate who demonstrates exceptional dedication, enthusiasm, and leadership through outstanding volunteer service. Since 2009, Dr. Salley has served in the role of project coordinator with International Development & Relief Board, which is based in Africa. During that time, he began a pilot program in Tanzania to deliver physical therapy services in outpatient and home-health settings. His patient-base comprise those with complex neuromuscular impairments. In addition to serving as project coordinator and physical therapist, he also serves the Tanzanian community through borehole and other clean water projects, disaster relief following military bomb detonations, school restorations, providing community education classes aimed at teaching English as a Second Language, diabetes care, and nutrition.
