ATSU holds third annual Free Family Health & Wellness Day

Rain clouds didn’t dampen the spirits of ATSU volunteers as they participated in ATSU’s third annual Free Family Health & Wellness Day held Feb. 20 at San Marcos Elementary School in Chandler, Ariz.

Hundreds received free health screenings and services at the event, which is co-sponsored by the Chandler CARE Center and BHHS Legacy Foundation.

Services included physical exams, hearing and vision screenings, dental sealants, and vital health recordings, all performed by students and supervised by faculty from ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, Arizona School of Health Sciences, and School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona.

Student volunteers did their best to make the event fun for the children in attendance. SOMA students taught proper hand washing techniques with the “Germ Detector 3000,” and athletic training students and faculty timed participants as they ran agility courses. Roaming tooth fairies and clowns, along with free popcorn, gave the event a fun, carnival atmosphere.

Families enjoyed arts and crafts projects with a local Girl Scout troop, raffle prizes, and a visit from the Phoenix Suns Gorilla.

Free clothing was also made available to participants. Members of ATSU’s Women’s Wellness program helped to sort clothing and other items by size and style the day before the event, making it easier for families to find what they needed.
