On Saturday, April 22, A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) and ATSU Student Life hosted Free Community Health and Wellness Day in partnership with Adelante Healthcare.
In less than three hours, ATSU-ASDOH students provided free dental care to more than 70 uninsured and underinsured members of the community. In addition to dental screenings, attendees received sealants, fluoride varnish applications, and oral health education. Patients in need of affordable restorative care were referred to the Adelante Dental Clinic.
Several community organizations set up tables at the event to share information about community health resources. Children collected fun prizes, including books donated by ATSU faculty and staff.
ATSU-ASDOH student, Jacob Shelley, D2, played a major role in coordinating the event. According to Shelley, it was a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
“The patients were very grateful for their treatments, but they were not the only ones who benefitted from the event,” says Shelley. “My favorite part of the day was seeing ATSU-ASDOH students educate and serve people in need. Overall, it was a great opportunity for service learning!”
