ASDOH students sponsor successful golf scramble

The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) ASDOH 2011 Golf Tournament, held at Superstition Springs Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., on April 30 proved to be one of the best school events of the year. The event was ASDOH’s first student-driven golf scramble.

“ASDOH had golf events in the past to help receive donations for the school, but this year was different — it was all about the dental students,” said Matthew Dahar, D4, and the 2011 golf tournament director. More than 80 golfers participated in the event.

Private donors, many of whom were ASDOH faculty, helped make the playing fee for ASDOH students drop significantly due to their thoughtful donations. Great prizes from dental companies such as Henry Schein, Inc., Brassler, Sorodex, and Designs for Vision made the tournament very competitive.

Notable winners of the golf scramble were D4 students Jenna Winokur, Brian Yates, Tanner Flaherty, and David Benson, who took home the honor of best overall team scramble score of 16 under par. Best ASDOH student team score was won by D4 students Damon Thielen, Nicholas Allan, Scott Josephson, and Brian Jochim, who each won a $150 gift certificate to Henry Schein, Inc. A portion of proceeds from the tournament went to benefit the Phoenix Children’s Crisis Center and the ASDA.

“The success of the tournament will be hard to emulate next year since it seemed like all of the participants had so much fun this year,” said Dahar. “This tournament would not have been possible without the help of our donors and the great participation from ASDOH friends, family, faculty, and students.”
