An exercise in creativity

William B. Leibow, D.D.S., MSD, co-director of endodontics at ASDOH, says he tries not to get caught up in the reasons behind his art. He simply wants to create.

“Photography is for me an exercise in creativity,” he says. “It allows me to get away and immerse myself in something other than teeth. I never have wanted to analyze why I photograph a particular scene; I don’t want analysis to muck up the process.”

Instead, leaving preconceived ideas behind, he usually photographs an area where his wife is painting. “Since it takes a while to make a painting, I can thoroughly explore an area, and if I come upon a scene that talks to me I take a picture,” he says. “We always travel to paint or photograph; it’s a great alliance.”

In fact, the two share a business that operates as Leibow Fine Art, participate in a few art fairs each year, and have several collectors.

Having started photography seriously 17 years ago after being hooked by an Arizona Highways photo adventure, a trip given to him by his wife for his birthday, Dr. Leibow uses an Arca Swiss 4×5 camera and a Mamiya 645 medium-format camera that allows him to use both film and digital. He prints photos in his home darkroom and uses an Epson 7800 printer for digital prints.
