ATSU-ASDOH awarded grant to expand oral cancer screenings

A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the Academy of General Dentistry Foundation to fund a project titled “Oral Cancer Prevention & Screening.” Mai-Ly Duong, DMD, MPH, ’12, assistant professor, ATSU-ASDOH, was responsible for obtaining the grant, which aims to expand the reach of the annual Oral Cancer Awareness Walk by offering four additional oral cancer screening events to approximately 240 underserved adolescents in Phoenix. Grant funds will also support the purchase of screening devices and development of 12 custom banners showcasing peer-reviewed oral cancer prevention education. Dr. Duong’s team aims to educate teens about the risk factors associated with developing oral cancers, the link between human papillomavirus and oral cancer, and the life-saving value of obtaining regular exams and screenings.
