Athletic Training program prepares for Winter Institute Feb. 1-4

A.T. Still University’s Department of Athletic Training is pleased to announce the Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) program’s inaugural Winter Institute. Themed Innovations to Advance Athletic Health Care, the four-day onsite Institute for DAT students will be held in Mesa, Ariz. from February 1-4. Distinguished experts from around the nation who have been instrumental in advancing athletic healthcare will be attending the DAT Winter Institute, including National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Board of Director President, Dr. Scott Sailor, and Dr. Gary D. Delforge, professor emeritus and founder of ATSU’s AT program. ATSU leadership and faculty will also present at the Institute including ATSU President, Craig Phelps, DO, ’84 (Taking Care of Yourself While Taking Care of Others).

The DAT Winter Institute will consist of a series of daily presentations, case studies and small group activities. Faculty will present, facilitate study section groups, project groups and reflection groups. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with each other and course faculty, which has proved to be beneficial to students who have previously participated in similarly structured onsite learning seminars.

“We modeled our Winter Institute after the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Leading Innovations in Health Care and Education,” said Eric Sauers, PhD, ATC, ’97, FNATA, professor and chair, interdisciplinary health sciences, ATSU’s Arizona School of Health Sciences. “As a participant and alumni faculty of that program, I found it to be the most beneficial learning experience of my professional career. Our goal is to create a truly transformational educational experience for participants that will empower them to lead innovations in athletic healthcare.”
