Students raise funds, supplies for mission trip

Through the hard work of three student organizations (A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and Truman State University Rotaract Clubs and the Kirksville High School Interact Club), several hundred dollars of materials and financial donations were collected for the First Church Haiti Clean Water Team‘s mission trips to Haiti in March and June 2014. They held bake sales, set up a stand at Walgreens, and collected donations from the Thousand Hills Rotary Club, The Rotary Club of Kirksville – North Star, and the Kirksville Noon Rotary Club.
Andrea O’Brien, director, residential admission, District 6040 RYLA Representative, and member of the Kirksville Noon Rotary Club, went on this team’s mission to Furcy, Haiti in June 2013, and will be going again with the team in March 2014. They will go to the same remote agricultural village to continue the work they started in June 2013. At least 250 lbs. of supplies and materials were gathered for the trip. The mission is centered around holding training seminars with community members on the dangers of contaminated water and to install clean water filtration systems in homes within that village. They will also work with the school children and local women, and do spot checks on filtration systems installed by the group last summer and from other mission teams who have visited the village.
