NIH & NLM data resources
Posted: March 17, 2020
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a number of data resources for you to use.
- Open Domain-Specific Data Sharing Repositories
A list of NIH-supported repositories with data available for researchers to reuse, as well as submit and access their own data. Each repository has its own area of focus, such as sleep research, genomic data, Alzheimer’s data, and much more.
- Other NIH Data Resources
A list of NIH-supported repositories that do not meet the full criteria for inclusion on the open repositories list. There may be restrictions on who can submit data for reuse, or limit access to data sets by other researchers. Knowledge bases are also included, which are “resources that accumulate, organize, and link growing bodies of information related to core datasets.”
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) also provides a number of datasets available for bulk download. All datasets are free to use. You may also contact the A.T. Still Memorial Library for support in accessing and downloading these datasets.
Some resources that provide bulk download for datasets include:
- MEDLINE/PubMed
- MeSH
- Visible Human Project: Three-dimensional representations of a human male body and a human female body.
- Pill Image: approximately 4,000 Reference Pill Images and 133,000 Consumer-Grade Pill Images.
- GENE-TOX: Authority file used for the identification of chemical substances cited in other NLM databases.
- LactMed: A database of drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed.
- HSRProj: Ongoing health services research and public health projects containing descriptions of research in progress funded by federal and private grants and contracts.
If you need assistance getting started or following best practices, contact the library or visit our new data services guide, which provides resources and helpful information on all aspects of the data life cycle.
For assistance finding data to re-use, contact Adrienne Brodie, MLS, liaison librarian for ATSU-ASHS & ATSU-SOMA, for help locating a repository and relevant data sets. You may also request assistance with selecting the proper repository to submit your own data for preservation and reuse.
