Kate Krafft Thomson, DMD ’16, was honored with the Public Health Dentistry Award at A.T. Still University-Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health’s (ATSU-ASDOH) alumni barbecue in February 2020. Dr. Thomson was nominated by Kyle Henry for her work in rural Michigan, where she devotes her time as a public health dentist to better her community’s oral health.
The Public Health Dentistry Award honors an ATSU-ASDOH graduate who applies public health principles to effectively improve the oral health status or health literacy of a local, regional, or national population.
“Dr. Thomson helped establish a mobile dental clinic with the purpose of providing care to children and adults in surrounding rural areas. This fully equipped bus allows for comprehensive dental care from examinations to surgical treatments,” Henry said.
Dr. Thomson also helped establish “Migrant Nights,” which are designed to provide after clinical-hour dental care for migrant workers that seasonally seek work in rural Michigan farmlands. She is devoted to mentoring students by allowing shadowing and providing oral education to schools in her area.
“Dr. Thomson provides leadership in her community by helping to acquire funds to service mobile work and organize oral health education with fellow dental professionals in her community,” Henry continued.
