University’s strategic challenges and opportunities defined

The University Strategic Planning Committee (USPC) and the University Wide Assessment Committee (UWAC) are fully immersed in the vigorous processes that will ensure ATSU has a solid strategic plan and assessment standards by fall 2011 – a charge set forth by President Jack Magruder in early 2009.

At their October meeting, the USPC and President’s Staff identified challenges and opportunities to be addressed in the strategic plan. Representatives from across the university outlined these overarching areas of concern: ensuring comprehensive academic resources, maintaining and creating partnerships, developing and supporting curriculum, and strengthening support operations, which includes everything from space allocation and technical support to the cost of medical education and diversity among faculty, staff, and students.

With these items identified, the USPC will construct a plan outline under the guidance of UWAC Chair and ASHS Associate Dean David Wayne, Ph.D. The outline will comprise a strategic direction and vision, current reality analysis, and yearly plan and priorities.

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, who approved ATSU for a 10-year accreditation in February 2009, reinforces the University’s increased efforts in planning and assessment. The HLC will return in fall 2011 to assess ATSU’s progress.

“The HLC is looking for implementation when they return,” said President Jack Magruder. “So my No. 1 duty is strategic planning.”
