National Library of Medicine exhibit brings magic to A.T. Still Memorial Library’s Missouri campus

A.T. Still Memorial Library staff hosted their annual Missouri campus open house to kick off ATSU Founder’s Day events. The open house, which was rich with activities for faculty, students, staff, alumni, and visiting guests, was themed similarly to “Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine,” a National Library of Medicine exhibit. The exhibit is on display at the library through Nov. 4, 2016.
According to the National Library of Medicine, the magic in J. K. Rowling’s series of Harry Potter novels is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science, including alchemy, astrology, and natural philosophy. The exhibit explores the intersection of these worlds.
David E. Goldman, JD, DO, FCLM, FAPA, ’91, ATSU-KCOM associate professor of neurobehavioral sciences and past president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 239, delivered a guest lecture titled “Dr. Andrew Taylor Still and the Magic of Osteopathic Medicine,” which also featured a flair of entertainment showcasing his professional skills as a mentalist and illusionist.
The open house event also provided guests an opportunity to attend a demonstration of ATSU’s virtual reality technology and enjoy a Harry Potter-themed photo booth.
