Biggest gift in college history

Fred A. Couts, D.O., ’53

In a tumultuous economy that is leaving many Missouri colleges and universities facing severe budget cuts and a decrease in donations, one college is seeing major gains.

A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) received $7 million from St. Louis family care physician Fred A. Couts, D.O., ’53, who left the founding school of osteopathic medicine its largest gift upon his death.

Dr. Couts treated patients in St. Louis for 55 years, strongly believed in the unique form of healthcare that is osteopathic medicine, and was part of what some term “a dying breed” of physicians whose motto was “patients first, everything else second.”

On April 23, ATSU-KCOM came together to honor Dr. Couts. A dedication also was held for the newly named Couts Learning Center, formerly the Administration Building.

Read Dr. Couts’ full story in the spring issue of Still Magazine on newsstands and online in May.
