Audiology students provide screenings at Special Olympics

Arizona School of Health Science’s AuD students joined students from Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, and the EAR Foundation of Arizona, to provide hearing screenings for athletes participating in the Special Olympics Arizona Summer Games on April 26-27 at Mesa Community College.

The athletes were screened for cochlear and middle-ear pathology. As well, athletes that were identified as having auditory problems were either seen by an ear, nose, and throat physician, or received a more comprehensive hearing test from an audiologist. This allowed the team to counsel family members regarding the need for amplification.Athletes identified with significant hearing loss were given a voucher from Phonak, a hearing instrument manufacturer, to receive local rehabilitative care at no charge.
