Audiology alumna participates in mission

Lisa Koch, Au.D., ’03 is recognized for her work with the Operation We Care mission

On Feb. 15-19, ATSU-ASHS audiology alumna and adjunct faculty member Lisa Koch, Au.D., ’03, took part in a mission with Operation We Care at the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center in Marikana City, Manila, Philippines.

The Operation We Care team performed 116 major operations and a number of minor procedures, performed 180 hearing screenings, and dispensed 2,000 eye glasses during the five-day trip. “This was my first medical mission,” said Dr. Koch, “and it won’t be the last. The people of the Philippines were a most appreciative people to work with.”

Dr. Koch was successful in facilitating the pursuit of funding for a cochlear implant for a ten-year-old girl who was profoundly deaf. She also provided the local ENT, Dr. Joselito Mariano, with a screening audiometer, as most of the medical center’s equipment was damaged in a typhoon that swept through Marikana City in October 2009.
