ATSU’s Teaching & Learning Center hosts May workshop

A.T. Still University (ATSU) faculty members on the Mesa campus recently attended a workshop hosted by the Teaching & Learning Center, featuring a presentation by Sharon Obadia, DO, ’97, and Milton Pong, PhD. Dr. Obadia is the associate dean for clinical education and services, as well as an associate professor, at ATSU’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA). Dr. Pong is an associate professor of basic sciences at ATSU-SOMA.
The presentation, entitled “Faculty Role-Modeling in Health Professions Education,” highlighted the importance of effective role-modeling of professional behaviors by basic science and clinical faculty to student clinical preparation.
Dr. Obadia and Dr. Pong identified where effective role-modeling opportunities exist, and discussed how to seamlessly incorporate these practices into instruction. They proposed fictional scenarios to encourage participant interaction, engaging the audience in discussions about appropriate responses to common situations.
Two attendees, Lori Bordenave, DPT, PhD, PT, and Michele Tourne, DPT, PT, PCS, won a copy of “Understanding Medical Professionalism” for their contributions to the discussion.
The workshop will be offered on the Kirksville campus in November.
