Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health partnered with The Maryland Children’s Oral Health Institute to participate in the Lessons in a Lunch Box program on April 19. Eleven ASDOH students presented a 60-minute oral health education program and distributed oral healthcare lunch boxes to 239 children in kindergarten through 3rd grades at Four Peaks Elementary School in Apache Junction, Ariz.
The main objectives of the Lessons in a Lunchbox program are to:
- Heighten dental students’ awareness of underserved populations through a service learning activity.
- Provide oral health supplies and education to children.
- Integrate oral health education into the elementary school curriculum by providing four oral health lesson plans to teachers for use in the classroom.
The lunchboxes given to children contained Plak Smacker Sparkle tootbrushes, Tutti Frutti dental floss, Dental Care in a Carrot rinse cup, toothpaste, and a healthy food pyramid.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with children and teach them the essentials of good oral health,” said Michelle Panico, M.A., associate director, Dentistry in the Community. “We hope to have to opportunity to do this program again next year.”
