Arizona campus Wellness Week 2010

Every square inch of the calendar was full the week of Feb. 1-5 as students, faculty, and staff celebrated Wellness Week on the Arizona campus.

For the first time, 40 free student fitness assessments were conducted in conjunction with Wellness Week. More than 50 faculty and staff also participated in free assessments, which were conducted by Thompson Campus Center Director Dan Martin, M.A. He also presented seminars on the importance of health assessments and personal plan follow-up.

The Still Well Committee also got the campus moving with a hike on Treasure Loop Trail at Lost Dutchman Park, and the annual Stairway to Health challenge, where students, faculty, and staff earn raffle tickets for climbing the stairs throughout the week. There were 59 Stairway to Health participants who climbed up and down the stairs 756 times through the course of the week for a total of 12.5 miles. Jen Apel, Audiology, won the raffle and received an MP3 sport armband.

Also offered were seminars on carpal tunnel syndrome, social etiquette, and student leadership; audiology screenings by audiology students; and movement quality assessments by the Athletic Training Student Association. SOMA student groups sold T-shirts to benefit Haiti earthquake victims, and collected clothing donations to benefit Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa.

In the lobby, free healthy recipes and food samples were offered, as well as an emotional wellness first aid station featuring free stress balls, chocolate, gold stars, and hug coupons. Outside activities included introductions to ballroom and swing dancing, “de-stress by making a mess” pie-throwing, and the Adrenaline Rush bounce house.
