Community Dentistry

Community Dentistry : Smiles Across Pinal County : Clinical Education Outreach : Integrated Community Service Partnerships

Community Dentistry is an integral part of the curriculum for dental students at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH).

Community Dentistry focuses on public health concepts in the first, second-, third-year curriculum. ATSU-ASDOH students are required to experience the service-learning model to advance the practice of community dentistry. Students participate in hands-on community service-learning projects that include:

  • Unique collaborations with community organizations,
  • Oral screenings, fluoride varnish application, comprehensive oral health education to patients, and referrals,
  • Leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of their community-based projects.

ATSU-ASDOH collaborates with more than 50 local community organizations to enrich communities and benefit underserved or at-risk individuals. Organizations include schools; long-term care facilities; American Indian reservations; Women, Infants, and Children affiliate centers; Boys & Girls Club; Homeless shelters; and several other non-profit and social service organizations.

Annually, ATSU-ASDOH students lead or participate in more than 95 community outreach events, serve more than 13,000 underserved or at-risk individuals, and engage in more than 3,600 community service hours.
