ATSU program ranked in the nation’s top 50
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — A.T. Still University’s (ATSU) online Master of Public Health program has been named among “The Best Public Health Masters Degree Programs for the 2013-14 Academic Year.” This distinction ranks ATSU’s among the nation’s top 50 health graduate programs by Masters Degree Online. The ranking was based on teacher surveys, student feedback, and experts in the public health field. Masters Degree Online offers advice and information on various masters programs in the country.
ATSU’s School of Health Management offers a master of public health degree that allows students to choose from a general or dental concentration. Both programs are designed for working professionals and can be completed online.
The mission of ATSU’s Master of Public Health program is to prepare public health professionals for leadership in advancing public health; addressing health disparities locally, nationally, and globally; and promoting individual and community health and well-being.
Deborah Heath, DO, professor, A.T. Still University-School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, received a 2013 Medical Education Research grant from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Heath was awarded the grant for her research area, Impact of Technology Integration and project “Integration of Physiologic Measurements with Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment.”
J.D. Polk, DO, MS, MMM,’94, has recently been appointed to serve as dean of Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, effective Aug. 1, 2013.
Currently, Dr. Polk serves as the acting assisting secretary for health affairs and chief medical officer for the United States Department of Homeland Security.
Karen Snider, DO, professor and chair, osteopathic manipulative medicine, A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, is a recipient of the 2013 Medical Education Research Grant by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Snider received the grant for her research area on Best Practice of the Core Competencies and project “The effect of table trainer ratios on student learning of cervical muscle energy techniques.”

Martin Levine, DO, KCOM ’80, was recently awarded an honorary doctorate for his contributions to the profession and at the Boston Marathon by Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) during their commencement ceremony.
Along with Dr. Martin at the VCOM graduation were KCOM alumni Dixie Tooke-Rawlins, KCOM ’80, VCOM executive vice president and dean, and Jan Willcox, DO, KCOM ’78, vice dean, Virginia campus.
Joseph C. Creech, Jr., DDS, associate professor and director of pediatric dentistry, A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, was elected president of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). Dr. Creech was elected at the Annual Session of the ABPD held on May 26 in Orlando, Fla. He will serve as president of ABPD for one year.
The mission of the ABPD is to verify to the public and to the health professions that a pediatric dentist has successfully completed both an advanced educational program accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and a voluntary examination process designed to validate the knowledge, application, and performance requisite to the delivery of competent care in pediatric dentistry.
Dr. Creech is also a partner with Pediatric Dental Specialists in Gilbert and Chandler and has been in practice in the East Valley since 1980.
Joshua Parfitt, D3, A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH), recently had his research abstract entitled, Anaerobic bacterial DNA characterization using qPCR and pyrosequencing techniques for chronic periodontal disease, chosen among many applicants to the bi-biennial Ohio State University Volpe competition. The competition includes three countries (Canada, United States, and Mexico) and is open to all dental schools, PhD candidates, periodontal residents, and periodontists.
Only 12 abstracts were accepted to compete, and Parfitt was the only dental student to be accepted since the initiation of the Volpe competition. Dr. Inder Makin, MD, PhD; Dr. Vineet Singh; PhD, Dr. Morrie Reisbick, DMD, MS; and Dr. Marc Shlossman, DMD, MS, served as advisors and mentors for this project.
Parfitt was also chosen recently to represent ATSU-ASDOH at the American Dental Association 49th Annual Dental Students Conference in Maryland. Parfitt presented a poster to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and was able to engage in collaboration with the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Dr. Inder Makin, MD, PHD; Dr. Vineet Singh, PhD; Dr. Morrie Reisbick, DMD, MS; and Dr. Marc Shlossman, DMD, MS, served as advisors and mentors for this project as well.
A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) 2013 graduating class filled the historic Orpheum Theatre downtown Phoenix on Friday, June 7. Friends, families, faculty, and staff were in attendance to cheer on the new graduates as they proudly accepted their degrees at the commencement ceremony.
Sixty-four members of ATSU-ASDOH’s seventh graduating class received their Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree, 23 of whom also received a Master in Public Health through ATSU’s School of Health Management.
An astounding 30 percent of the 2013 ATSU-ASDOH graduates have chosen to practice in a community healthcare setting, a primary goal of the school. Additionally, nine percent of the grads indicated their interest in dual areas, which include private practice and community health-based settings.
ATSU President Craig Phelps presented the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to keynote speaker, Claude Earl Fox, MD, MPH. Dr. Fox is a leading expert in public health and has headed federal, state and local agencies in a four-decade career. He also serves as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Epidemiology and Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami.
Dr. Fox addressed graduates about public health dentistry and how they will now be part of a solution to better oral health in the communities in which they will serve. “Leave here dedicated to making your success your community’s success,” said Dr. Fox. Additionally, he spoke about the evolution of healthcare in the United States and the benefits of broadening partnerships between dental providers and other public health professions.
ATSU-ASDOH Dean Jack Dillenberg also expressed his gratitude to the 2013 graduating class, “We are so very proud of you and what you have accomplished and what you will accomplish as you move forward. I salute your courage, commitment and dedication.”
