The A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) AHEC program office was established in 1988 as the first program office in the Missouri AHEC (MAHEC) network. The ATSU-KCOM AHEC mission is to support and enhance KCOM's efforts to train primary care physicians and other health professionals who are well suited to practice in all communities, but especially in rural and underserved areas, and to coordinate KCOM's activities and programs with those of the participating schools and regional centers that comprise the MAHEC network.

The ATSU-KCOM AHEC program office collaborates with KCOM's Missouri Clinical Training Region and the regional AHECs in Missouri to identify and support clinician preceptors in high quality preceptor sites and to place students and residents in community-based training at these sites, with a special emphasis on community immersion experiences and provision of care to underserved populations. ATSU-KCOM AHEC also produces and coordinates programs to educate and inform medical students about issues of healthcare access, availability, and quality as they apply to medically underserved patient populations.

The ATSU-KCOM AHEC office also:

  • partners with Truman State University language faculty to offer Medical Spanish courses for KCOM medical students
  • provides recruitment activities and community linkages for the Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health (MOSDOH)
  • convenes several advisory groups to inform and guide programmatic planning and implementation
  • produces programming to educate and inform medical students about health access issues pertinent to medically underserved patient populations
  • seeks resources and manages funding awards for targeted projects
