Research Interests: Dr. Phillips' primary research interests have been directed toward identifying and characterizing the regulatory small non-coding RNAs (sRNA) expressed in Porphyromonas gingivalis and in investigating their potential contribution to this organism’s pathogenesis. Her future research plans in this area of research are aimed at identifying mRNA targets of regulatory sRNA, dissecting the molecular characteristics of a prioritized subset of sRNAs that she has recently identified, and investigating the role of specific sRNA in regulating P. gingivalis biology and pathogenesis in context of its potential contribution to both oral and systemic diseases such as heart disease and preterm delivery. Dr. Phillips’ long-term research interests also include the study of microbial biofilm tissue infections and its contribution to the development of chronic disease, especially chronic wounds. Her most recent collaborative research in this area has been directed toward assessing the efficacy of antimicrobial agents and therapeutics in removing microbial biofilm from dermal wounds as well as the development of diagnostics to promote wound healing.
