Train with purpose, heal with excellence

The A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) Still OPTI and Northeast Regional Medical Center (NRMC) Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) residency provides unique and well-rounded osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) services to the community through a continuity-of-care outpatient clinic, hospital-based in-patient consultation services, and academic services to ATSU-KCOM.

Mission

To provide residents with a comprehensive and structured clinical, didactic, and procedural education in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This education will enable them to become competent, proficient, and professional osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine physicians who are able to work in a variety of clinical settings and teach osteopathic principles and practice in predoctoral and postgraduate clinical programs.

Our residency provides unique and comprehensive osteopathic manipulative services to the community. These services include continuity of care in an outpatient clinic; hospital-based, in-patient consultations; and academic support to ATSU-KCOM.

About Still OPTI

ATSU-KCOM Still OPTI is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as an institutional sponsor dedicated to advancing osteopathic medical education.

Through a consortium of teaching hospitals, colleges, universities, and physicians, Still OPTI provides high-quality osteopathic principles education and supports the development of osteopathic competencies across the continuum of graduate medical education. Still OPTI collaborates with other OPTIs and colleges of osteopathic medicine to develop evaluation tools, curricula, and other key components that support high-quality graduate medical education and help cultivate physicians who demonstrate compassion, integrity, and clinical excellence.

ONMM residency program overview

For scholarly activity, residents are paired with a faculty mentor and conduct OMM-based research with the opportunity to produce and publish a research paper. Residents are also involved in quality improvement projects.

The ONMM residency program has continued accreditation through the ACGME and accepts entry into the program at the ONMM1, ONMM2, or ONMM3 levels.

  • ACGME accreditation since 2017
  • ACGME-accredited positions - 13 (3 PGY-1, 4 PGY-2, 6 PGY-3)
  • Five-year average board pass rate - 100%

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

Start date: July 1, 2026

Teaching sites: ATSU Gutensohn Clinic and Northeast Regional Medical Center (NRMC)

Program length: 3 years

Program size: 13 positions (3 PGY-1/4 PGY-2/6 PGY-3)

The Kirksville experience

Nestled in the heart of Northeast Missouri, Kirksville boasts a historic downtown square proudly displaying a statue of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, founder of osteopathic medicine. It is also home to two highly ranked universities—A.T. Still University and Truman State University—and is surrounded by a 3,000-acre state park offering trails, water activities, and other outdoor recreation.

Kirksville was founded in 1841 and has evolved into a small yet vibrant city. It was here that Dr. Still founded the first school of osteopathic medicine in 1892, pioneering a holistic approach to healthcare that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body’s systems. This revolutionary concept—treating patients as whole persons rather than collections of symptoms—laid the foundation for Kirksville’s reputation as the birthplace of osteopathic medicine.

From classic small-town festivals to Truman State University’s premier cultural and sporting events, Kirksville’s vibrant blend of art, history, recreation, and nature offers something for everyone.

  • Birthplace of osteopathic medicine
  • National and international OMM continuing medical education events onsite
  • Home to the osteopathic profession’s Museum of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Close-knit, supportive medical and local community
  • Low cost of living and easy commutes
  • Home to 1000 Hills State Park, with abundant outdoor recreation, walking trails, festivals, cultural events, and much more
