Our Philosophy
The ATSU Drabing Human Patient Simulation Center maintains a high standard of evidence-based case design and simulation practices, which provide a physically and psychologically safe learning environment for students to master their clinical skills. The staff believes all simulation participants are intelligent, capable, and motivated to perform their best, and possess a desire to improve. All who educate in the center must share that belief.

- 1 Laproscopic Surgery Trainer (FLS)

- All equipment is maintained by a dedicated Simulation Specialist who is also a certified Laerdal mechanic
- Currently has 146 instructors in BLS & ACLS & Heartsaver curricula
- We do not have a PALS course designation
- Northeast Regional Medical Center—nurses, physicians, interns & residents
- Kirksville ambulance, fire dept and police dept
- Truman State University nursing students and Athletic Training students
- Cost $110,000 each
- Refer to the poster on the wall for all the things they can do
- Programmed to match the current curriculum. For example, when students are in their pulmonary block, manikins will be programmed to have a pulmonary diagnosis. This allows them to bring all of their classroom knowledge together and apply it to a patient situation (physiology, pharmacology, etc). Can also view labs, xrays & EKGs as part of the case.

- All equipment in the rooms are real medical grade (ER beds, defibrillators, code carts, stethoscopes, etc)
- Cost $15,000 each
- Used in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course
- Pediatric Club has benefited from pediatric scenarios—this will be expanded this year
- Purchased in 2022
- Cost $85,000
- Uses teacher lead stethoscopes, or classroom speakers, to hear heart and lung sounds
- Especially helpful during Cardiorenal & Pulmonary blocks
- Great prep for board exams that have mp4 files that sound exactly like Harvey
- Purchased in 2010 for $145,500 each
- Each machine has 100’s of modules
- Used by the Northeast Regional Medical Center interns & residents
- Housed in room 11, which has been converted into a Surgical & Intubation Training Center with a new grant award from Northeast Missouri Osteopathic Charitable Trust. These have been coupled with a medical-grade anesthesia machine and laparoscopic surgical trainer.
- Received on a grant from the NEMO Charitable Trust in 2018 titled “Surgical & Intubation Training Center for Osteopathic Trainers in the ATSU HPS Lab”

- Aestiva Anesthesia Machine—$7278
- Also includes video assisted laryngoscopes
- Very little research—new technology
- Used in Tampa at University of South Florida for military training (walls are brown and sounds are set to military combat zone….in addition, they are using it for children coming out of anesthesia—children choose what color they want the walls and favorite songs and butterflies, or puppies or kittens projected on the walls…this has proven to help ease their tension coming up from anesthesia)
- We know we train our students to perform in controlled settings, but we also know our students don’t get exposure to stressful environments in school. We’ll be videoing busy ER and OR (from NRMC) and “immerse” our students for higher fidelity training (ie. ACLS scenarios, etc)
- A favorite for our student special interest groups (Wilderness Medicine, ADLS course, Sports Medicine, etc) Truman State University videoed their 2017 Homecoming Football game for us, and the Kirksville High School theater class recorded a scene with their long time professor collapsing in the room creating a high-stress scene for our students to perform BLS until EMS arrives
- Used by local Ambulance & Fire Dept for crew training—they videoed their training ground for us
- New in 2023—$150,000 for Victoria & her baby, and Newborn Tori
- Donation by an Alumni Family
- Previous birthing simulator retired after delivering 1426 births (2015-2023)
- New Victoria and Newborn Tori have a mixed reality component. Students can wear Hololens goggles and watch the newborn advance through the birthing process.
- Very Interprofessional—used by other disciplines blended with our med students
- Truman State University nursing students do interprofessional scenarios with our med students
- Northeast Regional Medical Center Labor & Delivery nurses do their high-risk delivery training
- Northeast Regional Medical Center Interns & Residents practice high-risk deliveries & newborn resuscitation
- Local ambulance crew does their high-risk delivery training
- Used for Neonatal Resuscitation Program by hospital nurses and physicians and KCOM medical students
- All 2nd-year medical students have an opportunity to do a spontaneous vaginal delivery in their 3rd semester with our OB/Gyn Physician/Faculty—Social Media BLOWS up during that month!!
- OB/Gyn Club students are very involved with this suite—they wrote a grant to secure additional gynecology attachments so students could also learn about cervical pathology, birth control devices, and normal cervix assessment
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring looks exactly like what you would see in a hospital setting
- She’s capable of vaginal delivery, C-section, breech, cord around the neck, cord coming out first, postpartum hemorrhage, etc.
