Background
E-cigarette (e-cig) popularity continues to explode in the United States since their inception in 2004. E-cigs, also known as vape pens, e-hookahs, mods, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), vary in design but generally are battery operated devices with a heating element that vaporizes a solution of chemicals that contain nicotine and other additives: propylene glycol, glycerin/glycerol, and flavoring agents. Regulation continues to be modified by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). WIth extreme variation in products, there have been incidents where certain e-cigs have been marketed as nicotine-free when they contained nicotine.
