Museum receives $38K grant to fund transcription of A.T. Still’s personal papers

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

The Missouri State Library Office of the Secretary of State (Library Services and Technology Act Federal Grant Program) has awarded the Still National Osteopathic Museum’s International Center for Osteopathic History and the A.T. Still Memorial Library $38,761 to transcribe and digitize the historical handwritten personal papers of Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O., the founder of osteopathy.

There is an ever increasing demand for access to the Dr. Still’s papers - his correspondence, manuscripts, notes, Civil War records, and documents reflecting his philosophy, holistic perception of patients, and his unique, homespun approach to both.

This grant will allow us to transcribe and place online with the Missouri Digital Heritage database more than 560 pages of Dr. Still’s documents for patrons throughout Missouri and the world according to Curator Loguda-Summers.

The project, which began in February, is now completed and can be viewed here.

Reading Room

The Museum has a large variety of historic books, osteopathic journals, photographs, documents, and other materials available for research use.

Researchers may work on-site in the reading room or write to the Museum with specific reference queries. (Due to limited staff, the Museum is unable to undertake extensive research projects on behalf of researchers.) Researchers planning to use the reading room must call ahead for an appointment.

Finding Aids/Collections Listing

The Museum also offers a variety of image reproduction services, including photocopies, photographic reproductions, and scanned images. The staff work closely with researchers to meet the specific format needs of different projects. View our Research Center Image Collection here. Contact the Curatorial Assistant (museum@atsu.edu) for information and fees.

Permission to examine materials does not include permission to publish them. Rights to publish must be requested in writing. Similarly, permission to use Museum collections, including publication, should not be construed as endorsement of the user's point of view or manner of presentation.
