My path to the Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) program at A.T. Still University (ATSU) began with the clear understanding that earning this degree would be essential to accomplishing my professional goals for the athletic training profession and education in Puerto Rico. As a faculty member and academic supervisor of the only athletic training education program in Puerto Rico, I recognized that our academic program must continue evolving to meet the demands of regulated healthcare practice. I knew I needed advanced preparation to help guide this transformation effectively.
I was motivated to pursue the DAT to strengthen my ability to lead curriculum reform, enhance competency-based education, and support faculty and preceptor development. My goals include aligning our program with licensure expectations, reinforcing professional identity, and ensuring that our graduates are fully prepared for contemporary healthcare practice.
In choosing ATSU, I looked for a program grounded in healthcare leadership, innovation, and applied learning. ATSU’s focus on systems thinking and professional advancement aligns with the initiatives I would like to implement and sustain in Puerto Rico. With this degree, I intend to implement sustainable academic reform, improve professional readiness, and elevate the recognition of athletic trainers as essential healthcare professionals across Puerto Rico.
