DAT Life Moments | Amy J.

Shadow

Pursuing my Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) at A.T. Still University (ATSU) was about more than earning another degree. I wanted to challenge myself to accomplish something difficult while continuing to grow as both a clinician and educator. I have always believed athletic trainers can make a meaningful impact by helping patients recover not only physically, but also regain confidence and quality of life. Earning my doctorate allowed me to deepen my knowledge and strengthen my ability to provide evidence-based care.

I also wanted to become a better instructor and mentor by helping students understand the “why” behind clinical decisions, think critically, and develop as lifelong learners. At the same time, I felt a responsibility to help advance the athletic training profession through scholarship, advocacy, and continued growth in healthcare practice.

Ultimately, pursuing my doctorate pushed me beyond my comfort zone, strengthened my ability to care for patients and teach future clinicians, and allowed me to contribute more meaningfully to a profession that has given me so much purpose.
