Research Interests: I am interested in understanding the role of ATP synthase in human health and disease. ATP synthase is the fundamental means of cell energy production in animals, plants and almost all microorganisms. The enzyme ATP synthase has been implicated in many disease conditions and is also a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of diseases such as, cancer, mitochondrial diseases, tuberculosis, and bacterial infections. My current interest is focused on three aspects of ATP synthase (1) Molecular modulation and identification of phosphate binding residues in the catalytic sites so as to improve the catalytic and motor function of ATP synthase. The long term goal is to be able to use ATP synthase as a base model in the development of nanomotors for use in nano-medicine. (2) Identification of the genetic suppressors and molecular probes for phosphate binding for ATP generation, and (3) Identification of natural and synthetic compounds such as dietary polyphenols and antimicrobial/ antitumor peptides to inhibit ATP synthase. The purpose is to cause apoptosis by depriving bacteria and tumor cells of, ATP.
