Web-based Material for Preceptor Education

The following ten websites, which are organized in 3 groups, were identified at KCOM as some of the most valuable preceptor education resources found on the Web. These links include information to help our adjunct clinical faculty keep abreast of the current medical education literature and provide thoughtful, deliberate clinical teaching. NOTE: In each case, a new browser window will open as the viewer leaves the KCOM website.

Group 1: Brushing up on teaching skills

STFM Preceptor Education Project
  • Prepares busy family physicians to effectively teach medical students in community settings.
  • Information regarding the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine's Preceptor Education Project 2.
Preceptor Development Program
  • On-line training for physicians who teach medical students in office or hospitals settings.
  • Topics include teaching in a busy practice; feedback; evaluation; teaching and learning styles; and preventing and managing difficult learning situations.
  • Sponsored by The Mountain Area Health Education Center of North Carolina.
The Expert Preceptor Interactive Curriculum (EPIC)
  • On-line modules for community preceptors.
  • Topics include setting the stage; effective teaching in the community practice; evaluating performance and giving feedback; teamwork in healthcare; information technology; evidence-based care; clinician-patient relationship; changing environment: managing care; health promotion/disease management; and working with the community.
  • Sponsored by the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers.
Becoming an Effective Preceptor
  • Introduction to the basics of precepting students.
  • Supported by the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas, Austin.

Group 2: Staying current with medical education journals

For the Office-Based Teacher of Family Medicine
  • Monthly on-line column from the Family Medicine Journal aimed specifically toward office-based preceptors
  • Supported by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM)
Medical Education Online
  • Electronic journal providing a forum for manuscripts, curricula, data sets, syllabi, software, and instructional materials related to medical education
  • Supported by Michigan State University.

Group 3: Exploring resources for clinical teaching support

Clinician Education Electronic Assistance Program
  • Links to valuable clinical and teaching aids.
  • Computer information for beginners.
  • Supported by Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim HealthCare.
Center for Instructional Support
  • Extensive support site for educators in the health professions.
  • Contains information and resources regarding instruction, leadership/management, research skills, and career development.
  • Supported by the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
ACP-ASIM Online - Community-based Teaching
  • Clinical teaching materials designed for preceptors.
  • A patient presentation format for learners, the RIME framework, a clinical skills inventory, and clinical problem-solving cases.
  • Searchable database of Clearinghouse materials, articles, and publications related to community-based teaching.
