Dr. Carmichael attended North Texas Agricultural College and the University of Texas in Austin. A lifelong resident of Oak Cliff, Texas, until 2006, he had a family practice there for 48 years. He is survived by his wife, Juanita, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 

The family asks that gifts in his memory be made to KCOM or Vista Care Hospice of San Angelo.

Dr. Ward was raised in Sharon, Pa. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He then attended Washington and Jefferson College, receiving a B.A. degree. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

 

He was residency trained in ophthalmology and ear, nose, and throat and practiced in Largo, Fla., for 36 years. He started the Indian Rocks State Bank in 1986, where he served as chair of the board until its merger with First National Bank of Florida (it later became Fifth Third Bank). He graduated from Prochnow Banking School at the University of Wisconsin. He was a past president of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, past president of the Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology. He was also a licensed contractor, interested in geology, a triathlon winner, and served as a missionary in Ecuador where he treated eye diseases and cataracts. He and his wife, Margaret, traveled the world when he retired.

 

He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 56 years, several children and grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers those who wish may make a gift in Dr. Ward's memory to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Pancreatic Research Institute. Dr. Anderson graduated from Ferris State University as a pharmacist before attending KCOM. He practiced in Jackson, Mich., for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, and his grandson, and he is survived by his children and granddaughter. Memorials may be made to the Clinton County RESA.

Thomas A. Sainz, D.O., ‘93

Dr. Sainz passed away unexpectedly at his home. He was raised in East Lansing, Mich., and received his bachelors degree from Western Michigan University. He served in the Air Force and later the Michigan Air National Guard as an F-15 fighter pilot. He practiced at Silver Creek Family Health Center in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Zhanna, two daughters, and many other family members.

1930s
Victor H. Bagnall, D.O., '39

Maple Valley, Wash.
January 27, 2010

Dr. Bagnall was born in Staten Island, N.Y. With the threat of WWII, he put his medical practice on hold and joined the U.S. Marines, along with two of his brothers. Because he was an osteopathic physician, he was transferred to the U.S. Navy and given a line commission, becoming the Commanding Officer of USS (LCI) 514. He took his ship onto the beach in the first wave of Normandy, the first wave of the invasion of southern France, and into other major war fronts.

He returned to practice after the war, but when the Korean War broke out he was recalled and served as Provost Marshal on Treasure island in San Francisco. He retired as a LCMD.

 

He wrote and published two books on nutritional therapy and was a well-known lecturer on the subject around the country. He retired to Washington state after practicing for over 40 years.

 

Dr. Bagnall is survived by his wife and his son.

Dr. Myer was born in Baltimore, Md., and in 1943 he graduated from Washington College, Chestertown, Md. He practiced at offices in Vienna and Williamstown, W.Va., and Beverly and Waterford, Ohio. He was on staff at Selby General Hospital, Marietta, Ohio, for over 50 years. In addition, he served as an associate clinical professor of family medicine at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Myer is survived by his wife, their two children, a grandson, and two sisters.

Dr. Mazzi graduated from John Carroll University in 1953. Following graduation from KCOM, he interned at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital, later serving on its Board of Trustees. He was chief of staff at the Hospital from 1983 to 1986. Certified in family practice, he started the family practice residency program and was its director from 1979 to 1989. He was appointed chief of the department of physical medicine, where he served as a consultant in osteopathic manipulation. He was a member of the Family Practice Department and Forum Health Care.

 

His professional memberships included the American Medical Association, the Academy of Disability Examining Physicians, the College of Family Practice, the American Osteopathic Association, and the Ohio Osteopathic Association.

During his tenure as president of the Tenth District Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, he was instrumental in establishing the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio State University in Athens. He served on the first admissions committee and was appointed adjunct professor of family practice. He was also a consulting physician and member of the Upjohn Health Care Service Advisory Committee and served as a physician for the Mahoning County jail for 15 years. He retired in 2002 after 44 years in family practice.

 

He is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren.

Willis W. Zimmerman, D.O., '58

Dr. Zimmerman was born in Okmulgee, Okla, and was a graduate of the University of Tulsa. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

 

He practiced for 40 years in East Toledo, delivering more than 1,000 babes. He served as chief of staff at the former Parkview Hospital where he did a lot of teaching as director of the family practice residency program. He also treated Toledo firefighters and police officers for their on-the-job musculoskeletal injuries.

 

He is survived by his wife, Janys, a son, a daughter, and two grandchildren. Dr. Zimmerman's family has requested any tribute for him be given to ATSU-KCOM , the Collingwood Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, or the charity of the donor's choice.
