Fact Sheet

  • A.T. Still University received accreditation on its proposed new college of osteopathic medicine from the Commission on Osteopathic Accreditation on Sept. 10, 2006.
  • The yet-to-be named college will be located in Mesa, Ariz., on A.T. Still University’s existing 50-acre campus.
  • When the new college opens, it will be only the second medical school in the state of Arizona. Initial enrollment is expected to be around 100 students.
  • The college will begin accepting enrollment applications in Fall 2006, and classes will start in Fall 2007.
  • Planning for the school began in 2004. As part of the planning process, A.T. Still University formed and consulted with a cadre of experts (Blue Ribbon Committees), including national healthcare specialists, medical educators, and technology leaders.
  • The curriculum and training offered by the new college of medicine differs in several ways from traditional medical schools:
    • Small study groups will receive greater emphasis than lectures.
    • Best Evidence Medical Education (BEME) process will be followed.
    • Students will spend three of their four years of training in community-based health centers around the country
  • The new school is intended to complement the medical school model used by ATSU's Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo.
    • As the founding college of osteopathic medicine, KCOM pioneered the field of humanistic medical care based on an integrated approach.
