Student Support Services

Below is an overview of some of the services available:

Student organizations

Students have a number of opportunities to become involved in the MOSDOH community through organizations. In addition to Student Government Association and Student Ambassadors, there are social and professional organizations on campus. Please click here to access more information about some of the involvement opportunities available.

Counseling Services

ATSU Counseling Services provides free of charge individual, couple, and group counseling for all students, their partners, and/or families. The counselor provides confidential services in coping with the challenges of dental school and helps to foster positive development and personal growth and prevent the negative consequences of stress. Referral and outreach services are also available.

Learning Resources

The director of learning resources assesses individual learning preferences and applies cognitive theory to enrich academic performance. Students often form study groups and partners on their own. In addition to these self-formed study groups/partners, Learning Resources coordinates a formal tutoring program. With assistance and recommendations from faculty, peer tutors are identified and made available to students who need help, free of charge. In addition, Learning Resources assists in providing accommodations for students with identified learning disabilities, test taking assessment, specialty selection, and board review.

Thompson Campus Center

In keeping with ATSU’s focus on wellness, ATSU established the Thompson Campus Center (TCC), an on-campus fitness and recreational facility, in 1982. TCC facilities include basketball courts, indoor tennis court, indoor jogging area, climbing wall, racquetball/wallyball courts, and strength/cardio/exercise room. Also, a paved fitness trail follows the perimeter of the property, and an extensive nature trail winds through the woods west of the TCC for several miles. In addition, the TCC also facilitates various classes and intramurals.

Classes:
Akido
Ballroom dancing
Break dancing
Cardio kickboxing
Karate
Pilates
Quad step
Spinning
Step aerobics
Toning
Weight training circuit
Yoga

Intramurals:
Football – fall (September – November)

Volleyball – winter (October – March)
Indoor soccer – winter/spring (October – March)
Softball – spring/summer (April – August)
Racquetball leagues (year-round)

Intramurals are open to all students, student spouses, faculty, and community members.

The TCC also sponsors an annual float trip to the Current River in southern Missouri, canoe instruction, golf lessons, and bike tune-up, which are open to students, spouses, and partners.

Still-Well Program

ATSU’s voluntary student wellness program, Still-Well, uses the distinctive osteopathic philosophy of holistic medicine to encourage wellness and health throughout dental school. In addition, it provides an atmosphere in which you can reach your maximum potential in body, mind, and spirit.

“I am my own first patient” is the theme of the Still-Well program, which encourages wellness and balance in seven primary areas: intellectual, spiritual, emotional, physical, social, environmental, and vocational. Each area of wellness has a team of members focused on that specific area. Team leaders facilitate team activities, programs, and events. Events coordinated through Still-Well include a creative writing essay contest, stress management/progressive relaxation seminars, nature trail development, residency match programs, spirituality panels, as well as fitness assessments.
