PT Moments | Whitney M.

Shadow

Due to my diagnosis of cerebral palsy, physical therapy has played a major role in my life. From the time I was 15 months old, I have worked with many physical therapists. PTs got me on my feet and walking. They pushed me and gave me the drive to accomplish anything that I wanted to do. PTs saw potential when I didn’t think I would be able to recover from several surgeries. PTs have played a crucial role in my life.

My role at ATSU is advising DPT students who are working on their doctorate by guiding them and answering questions that come up. When I worked in the Enrollment Services office at the Kirksville campus, I was thrilled to hear that we offered a DPT program. When a position opened in the postprofessional DPT program, I applied and started working closely with professors and students in the program. It has been exciting to see how supportive and enthusiastic our staff are with students. They all go that extra mile to make sure the students' needs and education are prioritized.

Because of my diagnosis of cerebral palsy, a couple DPT professors have asked me to talk with their classes about my personal experience with physical therapy. This has been so rewarding for me, as well as the professors and students. I want prospective DPT students to know how rewarding this field is and how it has impacted me personally and many other people I know.

Since the program requires students to submit a portfolio with their application, they will not be taught the same topics they learned in their bachelor’s or master's degrees. Instead, they will be getting credit for areas they have experience in and are only required to take courses where they lack experience. A lot of our students are surprised by how much they have learned in our DPT program. The six-week sessions are also a bonus.

This program is a huge commitment, but it will be worth it when students graduate because they will have much more knowledge and experience in their field. There is a great demand for DPTs. Don’t get discouraged when the load seems too much and reach out to staff for guidance. The DPT program is very flexible and can create the right schedule to fit most students’ needs.
