DHSC Life Moments | Courtney G.

Shadow

When I decided to pursue a Doctor of Health Sciences (DHSc) degree at A.T. Still University's College of Graduate Health Studies (ATSU-CGHS), it was about more than earning another credential. I wanted to continue growing so I could better serve others through health education, nutrition, and community engagement.

Throughout my academic and professional journey, I became increasingly aware that health is influenced by much more than medical care alone. During my clinical internships, I had the opportunity to work with diverse patient populations and witness firsthand the complex factors that affect health outcomes. Those experiences reinforced the importance of education, communication, access to resources, and community support, and they inspired me to deepen my understanding of how healthcare professionals can create meaningful and lasting change.

My foundation in faith has been an important part of that decision. Pursuing this degree was another step in preparing me for the work I am called to do. While balancing graduate school with professional and personal responsibilities has not always been easy, the journey has strengthened my perseverance, confidence, and sense of purpose.

Since beginning the DHSc program, I have gained new perspectives on leadership, health communication, public health, and whole person care. The program has challenged me to think beyond individual interactions and consider how healthcare professionals can create meaningful change through education, advocacy, and service.

Outside of the classroom, I serve as the Chief Operating Officer of JANYCOIS Your NextGen, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding opportunities through wellness, health, and community support. My experiences in both healthcare and community service continue to reinforce the importance of meeting people where they are and helping create pathways to healthier lives.

One of the things I value most about ATSU-CGHS is the opportunity to learn alongside professionals from a variety of backgrounds who share a commitment to improving the health and well-being of others. The faculty, coursework, and interactions with fellow students have encouraged me to continue growing both personally and professionally.

Pursuing a doctorate is not simply about earning a degree for me. It's about becoming better equipped to serve others. I am grateful for the opportunities ATSU-CGHS has provided and for the experiences that continue to challenge me to learn, grow, and expand my perspective.

My hope is to use the knowledge and skills gained through this journey to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Through faith, service, and lifelong learning, I look forward to continuing that work for years to come.
