For mission-driven professionals looking to advocate for underserved communities, choosing a career within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) represents more than a job—it is a commitment to purpose, community, and impact. FQHCs offer healthcare leaders the opportunity to make a tangible difference by expanding access and improving outcomes for medically underserved populations. These community health centers embody patient-centered, culturally competent, and inclusive care while allowing professionals to shape innovative health strategies that directly transform lives. Working in this space attracts those who value service, collaboration, and the fulfillment that comes from advancing equity in healthcare.
My career reflects that calling. As President and Chief Executive Officer of Golden Valley Health Centers (GVHC) in California’s Central Valley, I lead with a vision rooted in compassion and a lifelong dedication to community well-being. With over 25 years of leadership experience in FQHCs, I strive to impact both structural and human aspects—building stronger institutions while nurturing trust in the communities we serve.
What further solidifies my commitment and experience is the education that aligns with my FQHC career through the Master of Health Administration (MHA) and Doctor of Health Administration (DHA) programs from A.T. Still University’s College of Graduate Health Studies (ATSU-CGHS). The MHA program at ATSU equips healthcare professionals with critical management, financial, and strategic planning competencies, cultivating leaders who can achieve operational success while staying true to principles of equity and preventive care. Continuing that preparation, the DHA program builds advanced expertise in organizational transformation, leadership science, and applied research—empowering executives to design sustainable health systems that respond to evolving population needs.
Coming back to higher education after originally receiving my undergraduate degree 20 years ago, I was looking for practical and applicable education for my FQHC career, which ATSU has delivered. The curriculum is highly relevant and complementary to my current role and FQHC career.
ATSU’s MHA and DHA programs were not simply educational accomplishments; they helped fine-tune my philosophy of leadership—one rooted in evidence-based decision-making, empathy, and visionary stewardship. These experiences continue to inform my approach at GVHC, where data-driven insight meets compassionate leadership to expand patient access, improve outcomes, and strengthen communities.
