What is an Education Record?
The "education records" protected include all information recorded in an institution as personally identifiable or belonging to a particular student. The definition also encompasses any records directly related to a student and maintained by a party acting for the institution. For example, a vendor that has a data tape containing all students' social security numbers, names, amounts paid in tuition, etc., for the purpose of mailing forms required by tax law, would be subject to the confidentiality requirements of FERPA.
Education records at ATSU include grades, transcripts, papers written for a class, financial aid records, admissions applications, notes written by the admissions counselors during the admissions process, records kept in a student's file by the departmental chair or administrative assistant, information on accommodations received for a disability, disciplinary records, and many other records maintained by the institution.
