Microcolonies are aggregates of bacteria attached to the tooth that are too small to be seen by visual inspection. The microcolonies are just starting to produce extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and as such is not plaque. Plaque is a mature biofilm that can be seen by visual inspection.
