This streptococcal species is a primary colonizer that binds to the acquired pellicle. It is NOT a cariogenic bacterium. It produces lactic acid but NOT as rapidly as cariogenic bacteria can. It also lacks the ability to survive at low pH's. Cariogenic bacteria can survive low pH's for long periods of time.
