Sucrose is broken down outside the bacterial cells to fructose and glucose. Both of these carbohydrates (sugars) are then transported into the bacterial cell and catabolized (broken down) by glycolysis to generate ATP and pyruvate. Pyruvate is then broken down by fermentation to carbon dioxide and lactic acid.
