President Craig Phelps

On July 1, 2012, Craig M. Phelps, DO, ’84, FAOASM, became the eleventh president of A.T. Still University of Health Sciences (ATSU), which was founded in 1892. Prior to his presidency, Dr. Phelps served as ATSU’s executive vice president for strategic initiatives and as provost of ATSU’s Mesa, Ariz., campus for 12 years, overseeing the development and operations of the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, the Arizona School of Health Sciences., and the Arizona Health and Technology Park

After graduating from A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1984, Dr. Phelps completed an internship at Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, Fla., and a sports medicine fellowship at the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Phoenix, Ariz., where he continued practicing sports medicine and family practice until his duties began as ATSU president.

Dr. Phelps is a fellowship-trained primary care sports medicine physician and is board certified in family medicine. Practicing for more than 25 years in the Phoenix metropolitan area, Dr. Phelps served as the primary care physician for the NBA Phoenix Suns and WNBA Phoenix Mercury, physician for Ballet Arizona, team physician for Grand Canyon University, and team physician for Scottsdale Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, and Gateway Community College.

In 2012, Dr. Phelps was named to the Phoenix Business Journal’s Most Admired CEOs and Top-Level Executives. He was chosen as one of the Phoenix-area’s 25 most admired executives based on past achievements and ongoing outstanding leadership. Dr. Phelps was also honored in 2011 as physician of the year by the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association.

Dr. Phelps, along with his wife Stacy and son Zach will divide their time between Missouri and Arizona. The Phelps family enjoys attending ATSU events, fitness activities, sports, music, and travel.
