Faculty Spotlight

Ann Spolarich, RDH, PhD, FSCDH

Professor and assistant dean for research, ATSU-ASDOH; co-director, Center for Oral Health Research, A.T. Still Research Institute

Dr. Spolarich's research interests focus on the care of medically complex patient populations, clinical trials of drug therapies and dental product formulations, and interprofessional education and practice models. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her commitment and lifetime service to patients with special needs, and is an internationally recognized author and speaker.

Scott Howell, MPH, DMD

Director, public health dentistry and teledentistry; associate professor, ATSU-ASDOH

Dr. Howell’s research focuses on alternative methods of oral healthcare delivery, in order to decrease patients’ time and money spent. Through exploring different ways to bridge distances between oral health providers and patients using telehealth connected teams, Dr. Howell’s research aims to close gaps in access to oral healthcare for underserved populations.

Joy H. Lewis, DO, PhD

Director, National Center for Community Health Research (NCCHR); director, DO/MPH program, ATSU-SOMA; professor, internal medicine; professor and chair, Department of Public Health

As a nationally recognized health services researcher who works closely with the NACHC and CDC, Dr. Lewis’s research has helped transform quality improvement initiatives at community health centers across the country. Her research has raised awareness of the importance of social determinants of health and focuses on value-based care, implementation science, technology-enhanced active learning, and more.

ATSU manages a diverse portfolio of research, service, and educational grant awards from many prestigious funding sources. Since 1985, ATSU has received over $65 million in U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) - Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funding for primary care training initiatives and $29+ million from the National Institutes of Health, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other federal sources.
