About the Society of American Indian Dentists Student Chapter at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health

*      UPDATES:

*      Scheduling and providing tours of our dental school to undergraduate students and dental staff from IHS dental clinics

*      Participating in panels on college campus career days and dental conferences

*      Giving presentations to high school and college students interested in health careers, specifically dental

*      Creating an informational CD for prospective dental students (The CD’s information is from the perspective of an American Indian Dental student.)

*      Assisting another dental school, University of Minnesota, in starting another student SAID chapter.

 

*      FUTURE PLANS:

*      Hold an evening session on campus regarding the employment opportunities available through IHS i.e. Civil Service, Commission Corps, loan repayment opportunities, etc.

 

*      ACHIEVEMENTS:

*      A pre-dental student that we have been in contact with has been accepted into the incoming ASDOH Class 2011

*      Several new people & organizations are learning about SAID and its mission

*      Attended the Annual SAID Conference in Oklahoma City, OK (May 2006)

*      Host the first ever Dental Pre-Admissions Workshop (DPAW) at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health

 

*      WHAT YOU CAN DO…

*      Continue to spread the word about SAID and its student chapters:  Oklahoma, Arizona, and soon-to-be Minnesota

*      Seek out opportunities to communicate with American Indian students at either high school or college levels

*      TAKE TIME to discuss the steps needed to apply to dental school and what career options are available through dentistry (some students may not be aware that pre-requisites are needed for example)

*      Use the student SAID chapters as a resource for student perspectives or as contacts for interested students you meet

*      Be encouraging!
