Your Role as a Preceptor

Criteria for Preceptor Ranks

Clinical preceptors provide a valuable service for KCOM, as they are able to track student progression toward clinical skill acquisition. Active preceptors may be afforded the following clinical title at KCOM, depending on the criteria established for each position.

Adjunct Clinical Instructor
  • Completion of residency program in discipline relevant to the clinical area
  • Demonstrated clinical competence, board certification or equivalent, and hospital privileges
  • License to practice in the profession
  • Demonstrate an interest in teaching and participate in courses designed to improve teaching skills and evaluate performance
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor
  • Meets requirements for Adjunct Clinical Instructor
  • Evidence of professional recognition at the local level as an excellent clinician
  • Has served as preceptor of KCOM medical students/residents on a regular basis for a two-year period
  • Has received above-average teaching evaluation
Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor
  • Meets requirements for Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor
  • Evidence of demonstrated creative contributions to the academic and clinical programs of KCOM
  • Evidence of regional recognition as a clinician
  • Has served as preceptor for KCOM medical students/residents on a regular basis for at least five years
  • Has consistently received above-average teaching evaluations
Adjunct Clinical Professor
  • Continues to meet requirements for Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor
  • Evidence in the opinion of colleagues that the individual is an oustanding clinician
  • Evidence of state, national or international recognition as an excellent clinician
  • Has served as a preceptor for KCOM medical students/residents on a regular basis for at least ten years
  • Has consistently received above-average teaching evaluations

Please contact the appropriate Regional Assistant Dean to inquire about eligibility for one of these ranks. Together, you will be asked to supply the proper documentation of preceptor performance to the Office of Regional Affairs.
