Salary Information:
Resident salary ranges from $42,740–$46,009. depending on the year of training. Residents receive three weeks of vacation and time off for Program Director approved educational opportunities.
Benefit Information:
Meals are provided at no charge while on service; free parking; text pagers; medical library staffed by a full time Medical Librarian. Computer access is available 24/7. A $500.00 per year educational stipend is provided to assist with the purchase of educational resources.
The cost of living varies from area to area. Areas closer to the hospital often prove to be more expensive than those located further away. Rent for houses or apartments can usually be found in the $600 to $1000 price range. Housing is not provided for core students, however is available at a minimal cost for students completing a 1-2 month rotation.
Clerkship Opportunities:
10 core positions for KCOM students available per year. Elective and non-core rotations are available in any area or subspecialty at Des Peres Hospital or through our affiliations with other training programs in St. Louis.
Educational Program:
Des Peres Hospital, in the suburbs of St. Louis, is a 167 bed acute care mixed DO and MD staff facility. This AOA accredited hospital has been a training site for thousands of DOs since 1948. Residency training in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Orthopedic Surgery and Otolaryngology/FPS is available. Upon inspection, the AOA has given all of our residency programs a four or five year approval – a testament to the quality of our residency programs and the commitment of the faculty.
Des Peres Hospital provides training to 20 core medical students per year from three colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. Core rotations in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, and Family Medicine are available on site.
General Surgery services include the subspecialty of Open Heart Cardiovascular Surgery. Internal Medicine services include the subspecialties of Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary, Geriatric Medicine and ICU. The Emergency Medical services are not trauma designated but include a wide range of emergency services seen at any major metropolitan hospital. Anesthesia services offer an opportunity to develop the skills of intubations and intravenous access. Family Medicine is both an in-patient service as well as the rural health initiative of a 5 D.O. member out patient clinic.
The core rotations in Obstetrics and Gynecology are provided at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, which is the largest provider of Obstetrical services in metropolitan St. Louis area. It is located within a 15-minute drive of Des Peres Hospital. Core Radiology rotations are provided at Des Peres Hospital and at St. Anthony’s Medical Center. St. Anthony’s is also within a 15-minute drive of Des Peres Hospital. Core required Pediatric services are provided at several private office based ambulatory sites. Psychiatric service rotations are either with a private medical staff psychiatrist or at CenterPointe Hospital. In-patient Psychiatric services are provided at CenterPointe Hospital.
Third year medical student are exposed to a wide range of medical services and helps them prepare for residency. DPH provides ample opportunity to experience the different practice patterns of both Osteopathic and Allopathic Physicians.
Educational Perks:
Medical Students and Residents are expected to attend morning report that begins at 7 a.m. Morning Report is a resident driven didactic program whereby medical topics or patient case reviews are analyzed. From 7:30-8 a.m., there are case presentations with X-Rays, Labs, with an attending present to interact with the House Staff. The attending physicians provide noon didactics during the week. Catered lunch is occasionally provided at these meetings. Medical Students are also encouraged to attend the individual residency reading clubs in Anesthesia, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, ENT, and Orthopedic Surgery. Tumor Board and OMT committees meet monthly and house staff participation is required.
Education Days are held every other Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm starting in September and lasting through May. Journal articles and patient case reviews are presented by the medical students. The journal articles and case presentations are an open exchange of information between other medical students and the Regional Dean of St. Louis. Satisfactory grades greater then 70% are required for completion of this KCOM requirement. During Education Days, preparation is made for Complex CE and PE. The DME will examine a simulate patient and medical students will write soap notes. Other issues of clinical, technical and medical policy are presented.

Des Peres is a small community hospital with big perks. House Staff enjoy the experience of having an on-site DME as well as an Administrative DME and Site-Coordinator. The hospital employs a strong Osteopathic and Allopathic teaching staff that does their best to provide ample learning experiences for each trainee. Des Peres has one of the best Cardiology services of any program, and performs over 250 open-heart surgeries per year. As a certified Chest Pain Center, Des Peres Hospital is also equipped with three Cardiac Cath Labs. Des Peres Hospital is a Center of Excellence for Orthopedics and Geriatrics.

City Profile:
Des Peres Hospital is located in the suburbs of St. Louis known as West County which is about 20 minutes from the city of St. Louis. There is a wide variety of entertainment for every age including the St. Louis Zoo, Science Center, St. Louis Art Museum, History Museum, Gateway Arch, City Museum, Laclede’s Landing and Grant’s Farm just to name a few. St. Louis is recognized as one of the most active sports centers in the country and local fans are noted for their enthusiastic support of their teams. Professional teams include the Cardinals, Rams, and the St. Louis Blues. Music, dance and theatre are thriving at venues such a Powell Symphony Hall, The Muny Opera, Fox Theater, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center and Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. St. Louis is famous for its thousand one-of-a-kind restaurants. There is always something good to eat in St. Louis’ neighborhoods. Bon Appetite magazine praised St. Louis as a “two-fisted eater” that offers a “smorgasbord of globe-trotting specialties”.
Every year Des Peres Hospital hosts an All Aboard Picnic held at Des Peres Park located at Manchester & Ballas Roads. It is a social event for all students, house staff, trainers, program directors and their families.

How far is a major metropolitan airport? St. Louis’ Lambert International Airport is located approximately 15 minutes north of Des Peres Hospital.
Is the hospital located near an expressway? Yes. The hospital sits right next to 270, between interstates 44 and 64, off of the Dougherty Ferry exit.
