City Profile:

Jefferson City was founded in 1821 by the nation’s third president, Thomas Jefferson and was designed as the state’s capital some 90 years later.  On the banks of the Missouri River, the capital building is a centerpiece of architectural design.  Over 80 trade and professional groups have chosen Jefferson City as their state headquarters and major industries continue to flourish.

Jefferson City is a short drive from the Lake of the Ozarks, Mark Twain National Forest and the Missouri State Fairgrounds.  The scenic waterways of mid-Missouri make it one of the most loved recreational spots in the state.  Other attractions include winery tours, seasonal festivities, a host of historical sites and cultural presentations.  Most of the Sundays in the summer include a church picnic with homestyle cooking.  There is the Maifest, Octoberfest, the Apple Festival, the Turkey Festival, the Cole County Fair and others.  There are many activities in Jefferson City or the nearby surrounding area.

Jefferson City is a good family oriented community.   Close to the Katy Trail and several Parks, there are many activities for sports minded families.   Numerous restaurants and fast food places offer a variety of foods.  The Capital Mall and numerous mini-mall shopping centers provide many places to shop.  Columbia is only 30 miles away and the Factory Outlet mall, which has over 75 stores,  is located at the Lake of the Ozarks, about 45 miles away.

What makes your program unique?

The teaching program is unique in that many of our preceptors are younger physicians.  Younger physicians are able to relate more closely with the program participants, thus creating a more conducive environment for learning.  Actually, many of our preceptors completed their internships and residencies at Capital Region before moving on to pursue residencies outside of family practice or to complete fellowships. Upon completion, many former interns and residents return to participate in the program which is a testimonial in itself to the program and community.
