Hospital Highlights:

The SIU Center for Family Medicine is the heart of our training program. The Center is located in a “neighborhood setting”, ideally situated within walking distance of SIU School of Medicine, and the program’s two affiliated hospitals; Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital. At over 30,000 sq. feet, the Center has allowed us to enhance and improve our clinical services and teaching facilities. The Center has thirty exam rooms, including a walk-in urgent care clinic for our established patients. Every exam room is equipped with a computer for access of our electronic medical records during the patient visit. There are two procedure suites equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, allowing residents the capability of performing a number of different types of procedures. Teaching space includes a large classroom for weekly resident conferences, a conference room set up for telemedicine conferencing, and faculty supervision space adjacent to the resident office space. Each resident has their own individual area in a spacious residency office which is located adjacent to the resident clinical space. The residency office also has computers and a library available for residents to utilize.

Within the Center for Family Medicine, close supervision by dedicated faculty ensures that each resident receives necessary help and guidance. Daily feedback is provided in a positive, creative, constructive manner. The resident will use the resources connected to the Center to investigate, analyze and integrate the solution for each patient’s problem. The emphasis is on the Family Physician as the problem solver and the orchestrator/manager of all the resources available and needed. The Center facilitates our emphasis on continuous, comprehensive care that can be delivered effectively within the changing health care environment.

Both Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital are utilized in our program. Memorial Medical Center is a 431 bed, private, not-for-profit corporation founded in 1897. It is the flagship of the Memorial Health System with specialty programs that include: The Heart Center, Regional Cancer Center, Center for Neuromuscular Sciences, Psychiatric Services, and Regional Burn Center. Outpatient services include: day surgery, comprehensive diagnostic services, outpatient rehabilitation, and the new Koke Mill urgent care facility.

St. John’s Hospital, a fully accredited, voluntary general hospital, founded in 1875, is one of twelve hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin, which form the Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS). More than 2,500 infants are born each year at St. John’s. As a level II Perinatal Center, St. John’s provides a complete program of maternal and infant care, including a fetal evaluation laboratory, 10 bed ante-natal unit, and a 35 bed High Risk Neonatal Center. St. John’s also houses the highly regarded Prairie Heart Institute with a full range of cardiology and cardiac surgery specialists who serve all of central and southern Illinois. The hospital has a 26 bed adult ICU, a 69 bed cardiopulmonary unit, a 27 bed oncology and pain management unit, a ten bed hospice, and a 49 bed psychiatric unit.
