Educational Program:
The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program-Carbondale is accredited by both the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). This program has an affiliation agreement with The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, for post-graduate medical education of osteopathic residents. Application has been made to the AOA for approval of the Family Medicine Residency.
Fourth-year D.O. students may apply to our program using either the AMA or the AOA match, but strongly we encourage D.O. students to apply using the American Osteopathic Association Resident Match Program to ensure that they will be eligible for dual certification when AOA approval of the Family Medicine Residency is received.
D.O. Residents are expected to utilize their osteopathic skills and knowledge to diagnose and treat patients in the clinics and hospital. The OPTI Faculty of the OMM Department of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine provides regularly scheduled lectures on Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
All entering residents who are not ACLS certified are required to complete this course within the first six months and will be provided during orientation. Residents have weekly office hours in one or more of the family medicine centers and provide continuity of care to an assigned number of families. Residents also provide periodic teaching of physical exam skills to medical students.
The SIU Family Medicine Center-Carbondale occupies the entire second floor of the Professional Building of Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Connected to the hospital by an enclosed walkway, the Professional Building also provides office space for obstetrics, gynecology, neurology, cardiac surgery, otolaryngology, and orthopedics, as well as a rehabilitation facility. The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program-Carbondale offers its residents an unopposed program staffed by full-time medical faculty in an up-to-date community hospital. Our graduates are well trained to practice anywhere, although our particular mission is to prepare our residents for smaller communities. There they may be asked to provide total obstetrical care, to resuscitate newborns, to assist at general surgery, and to manage in a humane and competent manner, the full extent of family medicine problems.
The patient population is diverse. Patients have a wide range of educational, economic, and cultural backgrounds. Patients are from all occupations including migrant workers, coal miners, business people, farmers, and faculty and staff of the University. This diversity in the patient population provides residents with a multitude of experiences, assuring residents of a well-rounded and versatile practice. Residents also gain clinical experience in the West Frankfort Family Medicine Center, which provides residents with experience in rural settings. This center is located approximately 35 miles from Carbondale. The satellite center provides residents with further experience in rural health care, including home visits, and in-depth experience with the ambulatory elderly. In addition to working with faculty physicians at the satellite center, residents also gain experience by working with physician assistants. Residents may also choose the rural track with the West Frankfort Clinic as the base for all their continuity of care clinics.
The SIU Family Medicine Center-Carbondale clinical area consists of a waiting and reception area, business offices, medical records, two nurses stations, 17 exam rooms, a lab, two procedure rooms, a supervisors' room, and a dictation area. The non-clinical area contains faculty offices, a conference room, kitchen facilities, and residents office and lounge area. Besides the usual lab tests, the center has the equipment to perform casting, EKGs, stress testing/Holter monitoring, endometrial and cervical biopsy, LEEP, cryotherapy, tympanometry, spirometry and colposcopy.
To enhance the team approach, ample space is available for consultations with both full-time and part-time faculty physicians. Residents also have an opportunity to work with a variety of other health care professionals, including psychologists, dietitians, social workers, and respiratory and physical therapists.

Testimonials:
My experience was a very good one. The residency program encourages success, with caring mentors and a variety of educational experiences that have prepared me well to begin my practice. Being in a dually accredited residency was also important to me as an osteopathic physician, and I think it benefited the allopathic physicians as well. I would highly recommend this residency program to anyone looking for a well rounded and supportive program.
