City Profile:
Davenport is located in Scott County and it is the county seat. It lies in eastern Iowa along Interstate 80, on the banks of the Mississippi River, one of the few locations where the river runs east and west. George Davenport, a fur trader, and Antoine LeClaire, an interpreter, helped to found Davenport in 1836. LeClaire had received the land from the Sauk and Fox Indians in 1832. Davenport was incorporated in 1839 as a Special Charter City in the Territory of Iowa. Davenport, population 102,000 as of January 1999, is part of the Quad Cities area and home to a diverse industrial base, 27 parks and three golf courses. It has been dubbed the Queen City of the West. Attractions include historic riverboat cruises and gaming, the Davenport Museum of Art, home of a collection of paintings and prints by American Regionalist Grant Wood; and the famous Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival and Bix 7 Race. Davenport is the home of Palmer College of Chiropractic.
