• Rotations: General Surgery, Trauma, Surgery Oncology, Peds, Transplant,
Urology, GI, Vascular, Bariatrics, ER, Critical Care, Internal Med, OB, Family
Practice, Cardio-Thoracic, and Colorectal.
• Mercy Medical Center: Level II Trauma Center, 917-bed acute care, 55 Critical
Care beds. Maintains a network of healthcare facilities in 15 rural communities.
Most ER visits in the state of Iowa.
• Educational Support: The Surgery Residency Program offers a wide variety of
teaching conferences attended by faculty, residents, and medical students.
• Research Year: In addition to the five years of residency, residents are
encouraged to spend one year as a resident in research at DMU.
In addition to the residency curriculum, residents (PGY2-5) are adjunct faculty members at Des Moines University. They give formal lectures to the first year students in GI and Endocrine and teach Basic Surgical Skills Lab to the second year students. Many residents also participate as facilitators in EBL.
Educational Perks:
Research Fellowship Year: Residents are encouraged to apply for and participate in a Research Fellowship year in collaboration with Des Moines University after they have completed their third post-graduate year.
